Hurricane Sandy caused severe damages in New York in 2012 October and BLIA took a series of interactions to promote disaster relief after Sandy.

Oct 31st, 2012, Staten Island

On October 31st, 2012, BLIA New York Chapter partnered up with UN Staff, the Give Them a Hand Foundation , the United African Congress as well as many other NGO’s to assess the damage in Staten Island and help victims start cleaning up.

Nov 12th, 2012, Red Hook, Brooklyn

On November 12th, 2012, members of BLIA as well as the IBPS Boy Scouts partnered with the Give Them a Hand Foundation and United African Congress as well as many UN staff members went to Red Hook, Brooklyn to help clean up the debris from Hurricane Sandy. Aside from helping to clean up Red Hook, volunteers set up shop and helped organize and pass out necessities to those in need of emergency supplies such as water, food and clothing

Dec 1st, 2012, Far Rockaway, Queens

On December 1st, 2012, BLIA New York Chapter partnered with the UN Relief Committee for NY and tri- State area victims of Hurriane Sandy as well as the Give them a Hand Foundation and the United African Congress. Together they helped staff the kitchen of the Southern Baptist Disaster Recovery Team from North Carolina in Queens. 15,000 meals were made served that day. Volunteers helped sanitize and prepare food as well as pack equipment. Food was packed into large temperature controlled containers ready to be loaded on one of the many 42 red cross trucks which would subsequently deliver the food and supplies to New York and New Jersey. Besides food, crackers, water and other necesities were packed and delivered to those in need.

Mar 20th, 2013, Donation

On March 20th, 2013, a donation ceremony was held in a conference room at the Mayors . BLIA New York Chapter presented a check in response to Mayor Bloomberg’s Hurricane sandy Relief Fund. Venerable Miao Wei of the Fo Guang Shan temple in New York and Ms. Shulan Huang, representative of BLIA NY, presented the donation together with members of the United African Congress. Immigrnt Affairs Commissioner Fatima Sharma, accepted the donation on behalf of the immigrants affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York City.  Sharma said that Hurricane Sandy was by far the worst storm that had hit New York City. New York City is still not fully recovered and there are still many victims. Sharma thanked both groups for their compassionate efforts to help victims of the storm.
